My holy ground rules as a brown person with vitiligo growing up in Dubai: apply sunscreen any time you leave the house before 6pm. No excuses allowed.
Not only is it a good practice for anyone living in a sunny climate, it becomes a non-negotiable when you add vitiligo into the equation. Depigmented skin is highly prone to sunburn, and honestly, the combination of tanning surrounding skin with sunburnt white patches is not something I ever want to experience again.
The sunscreen market is overwhelming. The sheer volume of options available can easily drive anyone to despair, and add to that the challenge of finding something safe and suitable for vitiligo skin that doesn’t leave you with a nasty white cast, and the whole experience becomes genuinely hellish.
For years, I dreaded sunscreen and would do my best to avoid it as much as possible. There is nothing I hate more than being out in the sun, sweating, feeling a thick white cast settling on your skin, and that unmistakable sticky, irritable layer that reminds you all day that you’re wearing something. Now I’ve evolved to understand that what I truly needed was just a sunscreen that actually worked for me and so I’ve become extremely particular when it comes to choosing one. Tatcha The Silk Sunscreen SPF 50
Let me be clear, this one is an investment, and I wouldn’t reach for it every single day. But on the days I want to feel fancier and I’m heading to a daytime event, this is the one I reach for without a second thought.
The formula is genuinely magical. It glides on like silk, which credit where it’s due is exactly what the name promises, and absorbs almost instantly with zero stickiness. As a brown woman with vitiligo, it blends beautifully with my surrounding skin tone and leaves a slight luminous sheen rather than a harsh white cast. Fair warning though that the sheen could be more noticeable on deeper skin tones, so it might be worth it to do a patch test in store before purchasing it.
Because it’s un-tinted, it works beautifully as a base for my makeup without altering my foundation shade. SPF 50 with PA++++ protection, fragrance-free, and non-comedogenic. It’s my ultimate pick.
Supergoop Glowscreen Soft-Radiance Drops SPF 40
The formula of this sunscreen is undeniably amazing. The serum formula is buildable and depending on the look you are going for, you can chose a few drops for a no-makeup day, or a more generous application when you’re prepping for a full face of makeup. Either way, it melts into the skin like a serum and never once feels like sunscreen.
For brown skin specifically, the two tinted shades do a genuinely better job of preventing white cast than most mineral sunscreens. I used the Golden Hour shade and it melted perfectly into my skin leaving a glowing radiance that almost looks like a sheer highlighter.
Fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, and plays beautifully with makeup without causing any pilling or slippage, which if you’ve ever had your foundation start clumping halfway through the day because of a bad SPF base, you’ll know is worth its weight in gold.
Colorescience Total Protection No-Show Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50
Colorescience’s latest sunscreen formulation is the perfect option for people whose skin is also particularly sensitive, easily inflamed or have actively spreading vitiligo where they want to ensure to not apply any reactive substances to their skin.
It is 100% mineral, fragrance-free, oil-free, non-comedogenic, and formulated with bisabolol, a soothing anti-inflammatory ingredient derived from chamomile that actively calms reactive skin rather than just sitting on top of it. This is actually my everyday sunscreen because it’s one I can actually afford to use generously every single day and repurchase without breaking my bank. Prices generally range between AED 40-80 depending on the discounts, costing less than a fraction of everything else on this list and making it suitable for casual daily use.
The growing trend of K-beauty is one I can genuinely stand behind, and this product is a big reason why. Being someone who doesn’t like to overcomplicate their skincare routine, I love products that serve multipurpose roles. This one not only protects my skin from UV rays but also soothes and maintains a strong protective barrier at the same time, which for vitiligo skin that is already prone to dryness and sensitivity around patches, makes a real difference to how your skin feels by the end of the day.
Being a chemical sunscreen is precisely why it has zero white cast risk across all skin tones, none, not a trace. It creates a genuinely strong, smooth canvas that holds everything, foundation, camouflage, concealer, without slipping, pilling, or breaking down through the day. For vitiligo skin where you want to do camouflage makeup and are applying multiple products to manage coverage, having an SPF that acts as a proper anchor for everything on top is a priority to keep in mind.
The formula gives a healthy, hydrated glow without tipping into greasy or shiny territory. It’s clinically tested to leave zero white cast across multiple skin tones including brown and deeper complexions, something Anua specifically tested for, which is worth acknowledging.
